Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company: The World's Largest Pharmaceutical Company

Pfizer Licensing, Development & Alliances
Partnering for a Healthier World

At Pfizer, we share many goals with our partners, but foremost is better health for people and animals. We are dedicated to reaching that goal through innovation in pharmaceutical and animal health medicines. Since one of our earliest agreements - which was drafted on the back of a New York City restaurant menu in the 1930's - we have worked to create successful licensing and alliance opportunities to identify, develop and commercialize products that bring value to our patients, our partners, our customers and to Pfizer. Today, we have improved on that tradition by building a nimble infrastructure that allows us to respond to opportunities with the speed and flexibility our partners expect. Our Business Development professionals in several groups work seamlessly to evaluate, negotiate and manage deals across the entire human and animal healthcare spectrum, in areas ranging from platform technologies to large and small molecules, from vaccines to diagnostics, and from devices to new, innovative and adjacent businesses:

Worldwide Business Development (WWBD)

WWBD is responsible for 1) global transactions, involving in-licensing, out-licensing, acquisitions and collaborations, of discovery-stage through marketed compounds, diagnostics and devices; 2) the full spectrum of technology and platform collaborations, including tools, targets, and leads for drug discovery, screening technologies, early development technologies (ADME-T), enabling clinical technologies, diagnostics, formulations, and chemistry from early phase through loss of exclusivity; 3) making Pfizer's corporate venture investments in innovative healthcare businesses; and 4) selectively moving into attractive adjacent healthcare businesses - outside our core pharmaceutical business - that utilize Pfizer's technical, scientific, manufacturing and marketing capabilities.

Worldwide Pharmaceuticals Operations - Regional Business Development (WPO RBD)

WPO BD is responsible for regional licensing of late-stage as well as marketed products across Europe, Japan, Asia, Canada, Latin America and Africa/Middle East. The group is also responsible for out-licensing in these regions as well as support of country business development activities in those regions.

Animal Health - Business Development & Global Alliances (AH-BD&GA)

AH-BD&GA is responsible for global licensing and acquisition of early-stage, late-stage and marketed products as well as collaborative research leading to innovative solutions that address and solve unmet, latent, and evolving animal health needs for veterinarians, livestock stakeholders, and companion animal owners in all relevant marketplaces and regions of the world.

What Our Partners Say About Us

"Pfizer is an important partner and licensee of XOMA's bacterial cell expression technology - they understand the value of our intellectual property, appreciate the needs and interests specific to our organization, and helped structure the deal in a way that maximized the value to both parties. We enjoy working with Pfizer -- from the scientists to the deal-makers to the management -- and look forward to exploring expanded partnership opportunities in the future."

Steven Engle, Chief Executive Officer and President, XOMA

"Pfizer's R&D team did an extraordinary job in keeping in touch with BioRexis as we developed our technology platform and moved our lead drug into the clinic. And when it came time to discuss a potential acquisition, Pfizer assembled a superb team to expeditiously complete comprehensive IP and technical due diligence, then move our transaction forward. As a former lawyer, I was truly impressed by the speed at which our transaction came together. Pfizer was direct and fair in their negotiations with BioRexis, and kept to every commitment they made to us, including following their own very aggressive timetable. It was a real pleasure to work with them."

David R. King, BioRexis

"PowderMed has created a unique needle free technology for delivering DNA based vaccines that has the potential to revolutionize vaccines as we currently know them. Pfizer has the resource, skills and commitment to take this exciting technology and commercialize products to provide the world with the next generation vaccines for prevention and treatment of disease..."

Brenda Reynolds, Chief Operations Officer, PowderMed Ltd

"The negotiations were conducted in a friendly atmosphere with a genuine effort to persevere and creatively overcome the difficulties. We were particularly impressed with Pfizer's teamwork, the excellence and the professionalism with which all team members, regardless of seniority, contributed to the overall endeavor... We at Quark feel that we entrusted our potential drug in the hands of a company that will nurture it and take it in the best possible way down the torturous route of drug development. At the same time, we are confident that Pfizer will continue to treat us as a real partner in overcoming the challenges that lie ahead. Undoubtedly, should the opportunity arise, Pfizer would be our first choice for the licensing partner of our next drug."

Daniel Zurr, President and CEO, Quark Biotech Inc

"Pfizer has been very flexible to accept the different structure of Schwarz. We have been enjoying the highly developed cross-cultural awareness and understanding. The joint teams anticipated many internal and external issues and managed them well at every stage along the process."

Andrea Schuetz, Senior Director International Project Management, Schwarz Pharma

"From our first interaction with Pfizer it was clear that they understood the dynamics of a small Biotechnology company. They applied their learning from previous acquisitions and were able to respond quickly as the deal progressed. We are excited to have become an integral part of Pfizer as we move into an era of increased emphasis on Biotherapeutics to provide a new stream of innovative medicines to meet the needs of patients everywhere."
